Nearby Alexandria considers itself to be the birthplace of America. The Kensington Runestone, a rock found in a nearby field with alleged Viking inscriptions dating back to 1362, is displayed as proof.

Tour this 42-room, 19th century mansion which was once the home of lumber baron Martin Pattison. Period-costumed tour guides take you through the house to observe the restored splendor of carved wood, marble, silver trim, brass and English tile. Upper floor contains local history exhibits.
