minutes away if begin at Lake Itasca
Location: A series of roads following the Mississippi
River from Itasca State Park in
northwest Minnesota, down through the Twin Cities, and along the
southeast border of the state.

If this is your first time in northcentral Minnesota, begin at
the north end of this byway at the Itasca State Park where the
Mississippi begins and you can cross the river on stepping
stones. As the river hooks through Northern Minnesota, it passes
through woods, large reservoirs and several cities. On the way
you'll pass the the Paul Bunyan Playhouse, a sculpture walk in
Bemidji, the Forest History Center in Grand Rapids and several
state parks on or near the byway. |

spur north from
Park Rapids to Itasca State Park on Hwy. 71

This lake-splashed area is prime recreation territory, with
fishing waters and the Heartland Bike Trail. The Tamarac
National Wildlife Refuge is a great place for bird watching.
Visit a gallery of Indian art in Detroit Lakes and a small art
