Minnesota’s signature cold weather is creeping in, inching us closer and closer toward the long winter season. While you may be planning on riding out the winter from the comfort of your own home or spending some time in a tropical place, we’d like to offer a different suggestion: A winter vacation getaway at Cragun’s Resort.
For more than 75 years, Cragun’s Resort has been a year-round Minnesota vacation destination—even in the coldest and darkest winter months. If you’re skeptical, we think we can change your mind.
Below we offer a glimpse into the fun and relaxation that awaits you this winter at Cragun’s Resort.
1. Ice Skating at Sunset
No matter the snow conditions, we can almost always guarantee a great sheet of ice in front of the resort. A large, lighted ice skating rink is established on Steamboat Bay and is kept well-groomed by our Marina staff. Years ago, one of our staff made our very own “Mini-Zamboni” to ensure a smooth surface. If you’re lucky, you might even see it at work.
The Marina has ice skates for rent for all ages and sizes. A huge bonfire is kept burning just off the rink and hot chocolate and marshmallows are available. In addition, hockey nets and broomball equipment are also available if a pick-up game should come along.
2. Horse Drawn Trolley Rides
One of the activities our guests say they enjoy the most at Cragun’s is our horse drawn trolley rides. Driver, Kurt Jorde, and his majestic team of Clydesdales will take you on a leisurely ride around the Cragun’s property. Kurt has years of stories to share with everyone. So bundle up, snuggle in and enjoy the ride!
3. Ice Bowling
Our recreation staff is very busy in the winter planning fun activities for our guests to enjoy on weekends and holidays. Many of the activities are planned to take advantage of our beautiful Minnesota winters and most include participation for the whole family.
Snow Bowling is one of the planned activities that is offered at no charge. No need for the bowling shoes—just bring your boots and parka, and plan on a fun competition for all ages.
Cragun’s Resort is located in the heart of snowmobile country. The Gull Lake Lighted Trail runs past Cragun’s and is connected to a thousand miles of groomed trails in the Brainerd Lakes Area.
Bring your own or rent a snowmobile from us. Choose one of our Polaris snowmobiles, single rider or 2-up snowmobiles are available. Cragun’s also has a large selection of rental winter clothing, helmets, and boots to keep you warm and comfortable. We have everything you need for Brainerd snowmobiling fun.
5. Marshmallow Roasting
Warm up on those cold winter days by one of our lakeside bonfire areas. Sit, socialize and share your favorite stories while indulging in marshmallows and hot chocolate. You can choose to join the main bonfire near the Marina and skating rink or make one of your one. Wood is provided.
If it’s a little too cold outside for you, most of Cragun’s lodge rooms have either gas or wood burning fireplaces or there is usually a cozy fire burning in the lobby fireplace.
6. The Sun Rising Over the Frozen Lake
Are the sunrises more spectacular in the winter? Or do we just slow down more and take time to enjoy them?
If you’re coming to Cragun’s, be sure to plan on plenty of photo ops while you’re here. We even have a recreation activity centered around a photo scavenger hunt.
7. Delish Cocktails to Keep You Warm
When you’re lounging in the indoor pool area, you can take advantage of the hot tub and games area all while looking out at a beautiful snowy Gull Lake. What could be better? How about enjoying cocktails and a snack at our Cabana Café?
The Cabana Café is open daily at the indoor pool for breakfast, lunch and light dinners. When the sun goes down, it’s all about karaoke and fun in the Bear Trap Lounge. Children, with their parents, are welcome until 9:00 p.m. Located just off the Lobby, the Bear Trap Lounge is a great place to socialize with friends and family and enjoy our featured “Drink of the Week.”
