1. Special Trips to Grandkids

We have 6 granddaughters ages 6 1/2 and under and we didn’t realize at first how special these trips to Cragun’s were to them. They ask many times during the year, “When are we going to Cragun’s”? They have grown up with our summer trips to Cragun’s! They look forward to the wagon ride with the clydesdales. They like animals so they also want to be at the animal show. They have to see the magic show too!

When they caught sunfish from the dock a few years back they would say, “Grandma and Grandpa look-I caught a walleye!” They were so proud. They each have their own pink fishing rod and sometimes they reel it in often to check for fish. They always want to go in the boat to fish. They caught a lot of perch along with the sun fish.

This year there were baby birds in a nest above the outdoor light so the little girls could see them learn to fly. It’s so fun watching them play on the beach in the sand with their buckets and scoops, and jumping in the water. They also love to go swimming in the indoor pool in the evening. The guys have fun building a fire by the beach for s’mores or hot dogs. Our two daughters-in-law like the massage treatments.

2. Watching the Sunrise

My family visited Cragun’s for the first time in 2008. The evening before our last day there, I jokingly mentioned to my 8 year old son that we should get up early and watch the sunrise over the lake. He immediately latched on to the idea, and got us all talked into it. The next morning when the alarm when off at 5:00 a.m., he sprung out of bed and started waking the rest of us up. We all made it down to the lake in time, and got some great pictures of that sunrise. It was a special time of family bonding that we will not forget.

3. Walking By The Lake

I remember while on one of our yearly family outings with the Austin Chapmans (wife Valerie’s uncle) walking by the lake in the late afternoon and seeing Austin and Nadine, after ~ 60 years of marriage, STILL walking hand-in-hand and enjoying each other’s company. What a life lesson for us all to enjoy, even though my wife and I have only been married 31 years and there are several newly weds just starting out. Austin has been a wonderful role model, mentor, benefactor, and Christ-like leader of the Chapman, Klein, Carlson, extended family. Nadine has also been a wonderful Christian mentor to all especially the women in the family. The Austin Chapmans are celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary at Cragun’s THIS week (7-18-10). Cragun’s has been the summer camp destination for The Chapmans and their extended family for many years. We all enjoy the week thoroughly and thank the staff at Cragun’s for giving us this idyllic time of fellowship each year!

4. Memorable Family Get-Away

We had our family reunion at Cragun’s for the first time in July 2010. We enjoyed it so much; I teared up when we had to leave. We were fortunate enough to have my parents pay for our stay. Our time there was not was not only a reunion, but a memorable family get-away. After going home, we had to deal with the everyday life, most importantly dealing with my husband still without a job. It has been a year and a half. I work full-time, but it is still hard. Today, we had luck come our way; my husband was offered a job and I am going back to school this fall. We are both so proud of ourselves, but we know it will be hard to get back on our feet. My two boys still talk about our time at Cragun’s, not only do they want to go back but so do we. Our ten year anniversary is approaching; I would like nothing more than to celebrate our anniversary, my husband’s new job and me going back to school, at Cragun’s!
