Ice Fishing for Beginners
Ice Fishing for Beginners

When you rent one of Cragun’s ice fishing houses, there is no need to stay inside during the long winter months waiting for the sun to come out. The fish houses are maintained by our marina staff so this will be the easiest introduction to a cold weather sport you will fine. The fish houses are heated and the holes are drilled for you. Rattle reels are provided and the marina stocks bait and any other equipment you might need. Cragun’s Minnesota Resort places their ice fishing houses a short distance off shore so you can easily walk to them. Be adventurous, get outside and try fishing in a whole new way–through the ice! Best of all, there are no mosquitoes or flies to “bug” you.

Imagine this. You bundle up and walk out onto a frozen lake on a clear and crisp winter day with your fishing license in your pocket. Be sure to bring a cooler of beverages and any snacks to keep you entertained while you’re waiting for the fish to bite. You will use the skimmer to keep the hole clear of the ice and slush that forms during the day. If you’re using the rattle reel, you will hear loud and clear if you have a fish on. Similarly, if using a tip-up, the flag will pop up if you have a fish on. If you are using a fishing pole, you should keep an eye on your bobber. Typically, we have seen people catch walleye, perch, sun fish, crappies and northern out of Cragun’s fish houses.

People enjoy ice fishing for the solitude of being out on a frozen lake and the challenge of the sport. Why not try ice fishing and open your senses to an exciting winter event.

You must carry your license with you when you’re fishin’, summer or winter. Be sure to get a copy of the current Minnesota Fishing Regulations to find out about restrictions, special regulations, new changes and general statewide regulations. It is your best guide to staying within the law and having the most fun out on the ice!
